"The dawn of the last day could not have been better - sunshine , blue skies and a strong southerly wind on our backs . The forecast rain was not expected to arrive until 3pm so we knew we would finish dry and we did .
We took a 5k diversion to visit the Blackhouse village - well worth it.
It was Sunday , nothing was open on Lewis and there were few cafes anyway . The support cars had sandwiches for the end at Butt of Lewis.
Once away from the coast the road was straight with some hills - tough at times but not too steep . The landscape was bleak moorland with a lot of peat cuttings . Which reminds me - Pete has been riding Anna's bike the last 2 days after his bottom bracket failed . Some effort as the bike is too small for him.
Mike described this last stretch as his most boring FW ride ever - possibly a slight exaggeration?
We stopped at a church to group up , were allowed a look around and even invited in for the service .
We gathered up again and after another 55k and 460m finally arrived at the spectacular Butt of Lewis lighthouse before 2 pm.
Photos , celebrations then cars and bike transport back to Stornoway.
Over dinner and drinks Ian was presented with a bottle of Harris gin for his efforts in getting the trip off the ground and organising it over the last year.
It certainly was an adventure and harder than many expected . Special thanks from myself to Theresa and Katrina for doing a great job in the support cars and for looking after Anna. There were many times when we were very happy to see the 2 cars cruise past us and stop further on . Not sure how such a trip would turn out without the vehicles but people do it .
But don't cycle it into the wind - bikes going the other way were not looking happy at all.
