"Short Ride, Long Coffee
Once
upon a time, long long ago, Freewheelers used to gather on a Wednesday; and so
it was today, with four svelte athletes ‘up for a ride’; John L, John P,
Jeff and Drew. The plea from myself was, not to do Platform 22 again and after
a few minutes of minutely examining our feet (or anything come to that),
to avoid having to come up with an idea, Jeff saved us with, “I know this track
that goes up from the South Deeside Road”. Thereby a plan was hatched,
with the knowledge that said track was steep and scuffy at the start.
Once we had hauled ourselves up the track on the flanks of the Hill of Maryfield, which was new ground for the three of us following Jeff, we noodled down a bit of single track to get to another landy track that gets you to about half way up the road from Bridge of Feugh to Tilqhillie Castle. Manfully we continued to the high point at Glenhead farm. Sort of decision time was approaching around how big a loop we wanted, and with the knowledge Jeff had just got a flight from Italy at 11 o’clock last night and actually we all just wanted a ‘bit of a ride’, a fairly succinct loop was devised.
To the slug Road, then right at Crossroads and down to the South Deeside Road at Wester Durris , across the bridge and so to Milton of Crathes for coffee and scones. As this is the one cafĂ© that ‘refills’, plenty of refills were had with lots of talking about cars we had known. When we finally extricated ourselves, time was ticking on and it was a brief thrash back to Banchory. No incidents other than one rider constantly fiddling with his forks; why? “To save my nadgers” - not a phrase often heard in the genteel circles of Deeside…"
