"We expected today to be tough and it did not disappoint although everyone managed fine .
The forecast was for rain after midday but it started to
rain at the top of the climb from Tarbert . This was a hard climb especially at
the start with a 500m stretch at 15%. A couple of FWs took the car to the top
of the first climb.
The rain was steady but mostly light for the rest of the
day - no wind and the first appearance of the dreaded midge .
It was mainly undulating hills after the big climb but a
bleak landscape with no cafe stops on the road until 50 k at Luirbost . But...
cafe closed on Saturday- bad news . The staff were kind enough to let us buy
food in the shop and use the cafe to sit down and eat.
As usual the support team joined for lunch and suitably
refuelled we turned off towards Callanish - straight roads and modest hills .
We stopped to see the Callanish Stones - and finally got
a coffee in the visitor centre - after 65k !
Then a final tired drag to the Doune Braes hotel in the
wilderness at Carloway .
A great ride but we have all had enough today after 76k and 718m - the hardest day for sure ."
